Abstract

To date a number of papers have sought to determine the influence of different stakeholder groups on greening within western firms (Fineman and Clarke, 1996; Banerjee, 2001). These papers indicate that only two stakeholder clusters, regulators and pressure groups are accorded salience (Mitchell et. al., 1997) by management. The aim of this paper is to explore the influence of different stakeholder clusters on the Russian manager vis-a-vis pollution control. The impact of two groups, regulators and the foreign investor are examined in some depth highlighting the role of resources in determining stakeholder power. The relative weakness of other stakeholder groups such as pressure groups, customers, and local communities in influencing managerial behaviour are also detailed. Implications of this research for stakeholder theory per se are also entered into.
