Abstract

In the two volumes of readings collected here, we have chosen a sampling of some of the most essential and/or inspirational papers for understanding the state of the art in the field of revealed preference methods. The papers we have chosen cover the gamut of methods that are typically classified as revealed preference approaches including: recreation demand models, hedonic methods, and averting behavior methods. We also cross the line a bit by including a section on combining revealed and stated preferences since we believe this is an exciting area of research with large amounts of untapped potential. While this collection is far from exhaustive, it was our goal to collect a series of papers that could provide the reader with an understanding of the breadth of the issues in the field as well as a relatively in depth understanding of the analytical methods and tools currently being used and further refined. Thus, we sought to include papers that we believe represent the state of the art in the theory and application of revealed preference methods, contribute to development of the state of the art, or raise fundamental challenges and insights that will drive the research agenda in the coming years.
