Abstract

The Best Available Techniques (BAT) Reference Document (BREF) for the Ferrous Metals Processing Industry is part of a series of documents presenting the results of an exchange of information between EU Member States, the industries concerned, non-governmental organisations promoting environmental protection, and the Commission, to draw up, review and – where necessary – update BAT reference documents as required by Article 13(1) of Directive 2010/75/EU on Industrial Emissions (the Directive). This document is published by the European Commission pursuant to Article 13(6) of the Directive. The BREF on Ferrous Metals Processing Industry covers the operation of hot rolling mills with a capacity exceeding 20 tonnes of crude steel per hour, the application of protective fused metal coats with an input exceeding 2 tonnes of crude steel per hour (this includes hot dip coating and batch galvanising), the surface treatment of ferrous metals using electrolytic or chemical processes where the volume of the treatment vats exceeds 30 m3 (when it is carried out in cold rolling, wire drawing or batch galvanising), as specified in Points 2.3 (a), 2.3 (c) and 2.6 of Annex I to Directive 2010/75/EU, respectively. This BREF also concerns independently operated treatment of waste water that are not covered by Directive 91/271/EEC as specified in point 6.11 of Annex I to Directive 2010/75/EU, provided that the main pollutant load originates from the activities covered in this BREF.
