Abstract

cada Unidade da Federação (UF) brasileira, considerando os óbitos que foram erroneamente classificados como “causa indeterminada”.Para tanto, foram analisadas as características socioeconômicas e situacionais associadas a cada uma das quase 1,9 milhão de mortes violentas, ocorridas no país entre 1996 e 2010. Os resultados deste estudo indicaram que o número de homicídios no país seria 18,3% superior ao dos registros oficiais, o que representa cerca de 8.600 homicídios não reconhecidos, a cada ano. Com isso, as estimativas indicaram que o Brasil ultrapassou a marca anual de 60 mil óbitos por agressões. Os cálculos mostraram ainda que o crescimento substancial da taxa de homicídios em muitos estados do Brasil e, em particular, do Nordeste, não ocorreu, mas que os índices oficiais foram conduzidos pela diminuição da subnotificação que se deu com o aprimoramento na qualidade do SIM.Não obstante, nos últimos anos, verificou-se um preocupante fenômeno de aumento das mortes violentas cuja intenção não foi determinada. Tal fato não se deu de forma generalizada no país, mas ficou circunscrito, principalmente, a sete estados: Rio de Janeiro; Bahia; Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco; Roraima; Minas Gerais e São Paulo.
