Abstract

As evidências sugerem que uma renda familiar insuficiente pode levar à suplementação de trabalho por parte de crianças e adolescentes. A pressão para que elas entrem no mercado de trabalho resulta em menos tempo disponível para atividades escolares e, consequentemente, em abandono escolar. Assim, a maioria das avaliações de impacto dos programas de transferência condicionada ou incondicionada de renda tende a dar atenção especial aos impactos desses programas sobre a frequência escolar das crianças e dos adolescentes e os números referentes à sua participação no mercado de trabalho. De forma cíclica, o chamado ?efeito de substituição? do trabalho pela escola reproduz uma realidade vivida por pais de baixa renda, derivada de baixos níveis de escolaridade, que é perpetuada nas gerações futuras.
