Responding to HIV/AIDS in the world of work in Africa : the role of social protection

Abstract

Provides an historical overview of care and social policy in Africa and describes the development challenges of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Examines the support available to workers in the formal and informal sectors and looks at the potential of community-based insurance mechanisms. Reviews and suggests a number of responses, not only to HIV/AIDS itself but to broader social protection needs.
