Abstract

Organische stof en klei worden algemeen als belangrijke voorspellers beschouwd bij het bepalen van de achtergrondwaarden van zware metalen in bodems en sedimenten. In deze studie werden de relaties tussen zware metalen (As, Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb, Hg, Mn, Ni, Se, Sn, Zn) en de hoofdelementensamenstelling van de riviersedimenten en de locatie en/of geologische ondergrond onderzocht. In Vlaanderen is er een duidelijke stijging in het kleigehalte van de riviersedimenten terug te vinden van oost naar west. Met principaal component analyse werd de dataset onderverdeeld in vier componenten: een lithogene component (klei, organische stof, Na, Ca, K, Mg), een samenhang tussen Fe-gehalte en As & Cd, een antropogene factor (Cu, Hg, Pb, Sn en Zn) die door industriële activiteiten verklaard kan worden, en het onopgelost residu. Meervoudige lineaire regressies toonde aan dat naast organische stof en klei ook Fe en Ca belangrijke verklarende variabelen zijn voor de totale concentraties zware metalen in sedimenten. Deze factoren zouden verder onderzocht moeten worden op een grotere dataset en op niet-gecontamineerde stalen om te bepalen of deze elementen eventueel mee kunnen worden opgenomen in de standaardisatie van totale concentraties van zware metalen.
