The local resource curse: the symptoms in the mining area of Gafsa

Abstract

Researches on the resource curse has been mostly discussed as a state-level phenomenon; few studied have been conducted on local resource curse. This paper aims to contribute to the local resource curse literature through the identification of its symptoms in the mining area of Gafsa. Results reveal that this region suffers from a local resource curse, the phosphate mining is not a blessing but it is a curse. It has caused adverse impacts (Economic, social and environmental impacts) on local communities.
