Abstract

En 2016 hors gendarmeries, 45 560 personnes sont hébergées collectivement au sein de 316 établissements militaires. Ces militaires et les établissements qui les accueillent sont concentrés dans l'est du territoire métropolitain et sur les littoraux. Entre 2006 et 2016, les effectifs des communautés militaires ont diminué de 23 % et se sont concentrés dans les plus grandes structures. Sur cette période, onze départements ont perdu leur dernière communauté militaire et seules cinq régions ont vu augmenter les effectifs des communautés militaires. Entre 2006 et 2016, la part des effectifs féminins au sein des communautés militaires a diminué, passant de 11 % en 2006 à 9 % en 2016. Les individus vivant en caserne sont plus âgés qu'auparavant et la part des diplômés est en nette augmentation. Les détenteurs d'un baccalauréat ou d'un diplôme de l'enseignement supérieur représentent en 2016 plus de la moitié des effectifs des casernes (53 %) contre 40 % en 2006.
