The new Franco - Genevan cross-border rail passenger service “Léman Express” in action : which first results ? which acceptability ?

Abstract

The Léman Express is the achievement of an old project, starting in 1912, of connecting Geneva with the French hinterland around. 16 km of new tracks have been build (2 km in France and 14 km in Geneva with 5 new underground stations). This new infrastructure offers a qualitative and quantitative jump in terms of connectivity and services to cross-border commuters, tourists and travelers. Starting in December 2019, with a range of 230 km of tracks from Coppet to Annecy, Thonon, Bellegarde and Evian, 50 000 passengers are targeted for this service: now around 40 000 passengers are travelling every day in March 2021. 500 000 commuters cross the French – Swiss boundaries every day which means a huge impact in terms of congestion and greenhouse effects : this new service will speed up modal transfer towards rail. In Geneva, this infrastructure has transformed urbanism with the opportunity to target urban development in an area located around the new train stations (Vincent Kaufmann). The key issue is to improve the French – Swiss interoperability of rail system. First assessments of users have to be reported also to improve the system and increase acceptability among commuters and Swiss - French travelers.
