Abstract

Si John R. Commons est souvent vu comme un économiste progressiste s'étant interrogé tout au long de sa carrière sur les voies d'émancipation de l'espèce humaine, il a parfois adopté des positionnements très ambigus sur l'unité de celle-ci, en particulier dans ses écrits sur la question raciale. L'objectif de cet article est de montrer en quoi Commons appara\ⁱt aujourd'hui comme un auteur raciste dans ses travaux sur l'immigration, ayant participé au développement du racisme scientifique au tournant du xxe siècle aux Etats-Unis. Ce travail permet d'une part d'enrichir les travaux francophones sur Commons, silencieux sur cette question, tout en alimentant des débats en histoire de la pensée économique sur le caractère raciste de l'auteur.
