Chester Barnard et la démocratie industrielle. Une autre voie du progressisme américain en déshérence

Abstract

Chester Barnard est connu pour son ouvrage sur The Functions of the Executive (1938). Ici, c'est en tant que promoteur de la démocratie d'entreprise que nous souhaitons le faire redécouvrir. Ainsi, nous verrons, l'arrière-fond moral de l'ensemble de l'œuvre de cet auteur, ce qui nous amène à tisser des liens avec auteurs pragmatistes américains et à l'associer, avec son originalité, au courant progressiste de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Mais c'est à travers la promotion de la démocratie industrielle émergeant de la démocratisation des organisations, qu'il pense le progrès social et la réforme du capitalisme. Nous finirons par argumenter dans le sens d'une continuité et d'une cohérence entre la pensée de l'autorité de Barnard et sa promotion de la démocratie d'entreprise, en montrant précisément que la prise en compte de celle-ci éclaire sa conception de celle-là. Ce sera l'occasion d'envisager les pistes que Barnard ouvre pour rendre compatible la mise en œuvre de processus démocratique dans un cadre d'exercice de l'autorité hiérarchique.
