Abstract

This document is a brief introduction to the concept of territorial resilience in social sciences. The authors, all members of the group of researchers named Irénée Zwarterook, argue that improving the public participation practices might be a way to increase the resilience of a territory facing industrial risk. This group has been studying the area of Dunkirk, in the North of France, for several years [Zwarterook 2010]. The focus of their research is the perception of risks and the functioning of participatory structures involved in the implementation of the French PPRT legislation (Technological risks prevention plans). Together with their scientic positioning, previous results of the group allow them to suggest Dunkirk as a relevant research field to pursue their analysis of public participation in the management of industrial risk in order to improve the resilience of the territory.
