Abstract

In France, after the disappearance of the provinces at the time of a royalty that had become absolute, the importance of the regional fact took time to emerge to finally materialize with the re-gionalization of 1982. Since then, numerous legislative texts have modified the competences of the regions and the way in which they can exercise them. In addition, a drastic reduction in their num-ber in metropolitan France has been implemented since 2016. In this context, this analysis focuses on three questions : how did France end up undertaking regionalization ? How can we consider the mapping of regions in France compared to other European democracies ? Do the competences avai-lable to the regions give them wide scope for action or, on the contrary, is there a contrast between their vast geographical perimeter and their political importance ?
