Abstract

Albion W. Small is a major sociologist of the turn of the nineteenth century. Founder of the first world department of sociology in Chicago in 1892 and of the American Journal of Sociology in 1895, his studies formed the basis of the "First Chicago School." This article aims to highlight how his sociology is always heuristic, whereas it has been left out in the sociological tradition. In this perspective, essentially based on a personal work on the author's archives, we focus more specifically on his relationship to the place, status and role of ethics in the pratice of social science research. His position on this issue remains topical, in particular to make it possible to think about cooperation between the social sciences.
