Abstract

This article presents the main pioneers of aviation in Nordic space before 1914. These were particularly numerous and they frequently maintained close ties with the great pioneering nation for aircraft: France. Some, such as the Danish Jacob Ellehammer, were even considered to be precursors on a par with the Wright brothers or Blériot. These first nordic pilots often came from backgrounds that were very open to technical culture and the organization of shows to promote it. They performed their exploits in the service of nations that wished to develop better control of their territory. To this end, the Scandinavian, Finnish, Russian or Baltic leaders did not hesitate to finance bold projects whose military impact could have been interesting.
