Abstract

Demand-driven material requirements planning (DDMRP) is a recent production planning and control (PPC) system. It is a subject of interest to the professional press. Indeed, numerous articles highlight cases where the implementation of DDMRP has succeeded. The demand-driven system and the dynamic dimensioning of decoupled points (resulting from a strategic inventory positioning) make the DDMRP an alternative to the traditional PPC system. Forecasts are no longer the signal to release a production, purchase and intra-company stock transfer order. Instead, DDMRP provides signals based on priority and critical colors – green, yellow and red – collected in a visual plan updated in real time. The aim of this article is to describe how this method works, define its limits, and understand the reasons why companies choose to implement it.
