Abstract

"Cette étude originale reconstitue et interroge les itinéraires de 773 hommes et femmes qui ont abjuré la confession protestante à Lyon dans la deuxième moitié du XVIIe siècle en s'adressant à la compagnie de la Propagation de la foi. Qui étaient ces individus ? Comment expliquer leur geste ? Leurs histoires personnelles et familiales, reconstituées au fil d'archives diverses, nous disent quelque chose d'essentiel sur les raisons multiples qui conduisent à un choix très particulier et extrêmement complexe. L'étude précise de ces cas individuels, saisis dans les différents contextes qui les éclairent, permet enfin de formuler des hypothèses plus générales concernant le sens d'un geste dont la valeur est souvent bien plus sociale que religieuse."
