Abstract

The spatial agglomeration of cultural and creative activities (art, architecture, etc.) in former industrial quarters transforms urban wastelands into creative quarters. These creative quarters are the locations for collaborative networks of creative workers characterized by collective dynamics of sharing but also by togetherness. In order to understand the dynamics of creative quarters, this article aims to test the hypothesis of the establishment of a creative workers' club within these territories. The club is defined as a voluntary grouping of individuals around the exclusive enjoyment of goods and services. It carries both an inclusive and exclusive logic. Investigating its existence in creative quarters brings in a reflection on the role played by creative workers in the current urban dynamics. Based on qualitative investigations (168 interviews), the analysis of the Panier creative district of Marseille and the Olivettes creative district of Nantes shows that a club tends to be set up in these quarters. Creative workers join each other to benefit from specific goods and services. They control the access to these resources through selection and cooptation processes. They define an exclusive group for sharing, accessible only to the beneficiaries.
