Abstract

A field study in Nicaragua shows that the Peasant Cooperative Movement is experimenting ecodevelopment strategies : i.e. both alternative and environmentally sound. In particular, these strategies incorporate agroecological principles and thus implement rudimentary closed-loops of resource flows, relaying on diversification and complementarities within the agro-ecosystems. The food-energy co-production is one of the relevant expressions. Such observations inspire in this paper a reflection on the ecological mutation of Industrial Modern Societies (ISM). At the heart of development process, and environmentally embedded, the organization of agrifood systems should be reconsidered in this perspective as a key issue. Then, if we consider this mutation as the central objective of Territorial Industrial Ecology (TIE), a reflection on the cross-fertilization between TIE and agroecological approach of agrifood systems should form a founding proposal.
