Abstract

En latin, indicateur se dit indicare et signifie "indiquer". L'indicateur livre une information simple sur l'état d'un phénomène, objet de la mesure. Si cette vertu des indicateurs n'est pas à négliger, leur dimension performative ne doit pas l'être non plus. En effet, les indicateurs ne sont pas des reflets fidèles de la réalité qu'ils prétendent éclairer. Instruments polymorphes : ils sont à la fois des outils de coordination, des outils de preuve, des outils de débats, des outils de contestation et des outils de gouvernement. Et ils peuvent même s'avérer être des outils de contrôle ou encore des instruments de pouvoir… servant à ôter des mains des citoyen(e)s la prise qu'elles ou ils pourraient avoir légitimement sur la décision politique.
