Abstract

On observe depuis les années 90, et plus particulièrement aux Etats-Unis, un renouveau des concours d'innovation initiés et financés par les Agences Fédérales américaines. L'objet de cet article est d'analyser les facteurs à l'origine de ce regain intérêt en faveur de ce dispositif. Dans cette optique, nous mobilisons une grille de lecture institutionnelle afin d'éclairer la spécificité des concours (leur nature et leurs propriétés). En nous appuyant sur des approches en termes de Systèmes d'Innovation, nous proposons un angle d'analyse nouveau (par rapport à la littérature standard) conduisant à considérer les concours comme des mécanismes institutionnels particuliers, complémentaires aux brevets. Nous montrons également que les concours sont utilisés par les décideurs publics pour stimuler la recherche et l'innovation dans des circonstances précises.
