Abstract

Trois économistes mathématiciens français, Jules Dupuit, Augustin Cournot et Gustave Fauveau, ont développé, au milieu du 19e siècle, des analyses de la fiscalité singulièrement différentes de celles de leurs contemporains libéraux. Cherchant à donner aux politiques publiques des principes rationnels, ces trois auteurs ont chacun proposé une étude formalisée de l'impôt, ce que ne faisait aucun autre économiste européen à cette époque. Ils ont apporté, aux mêmes questions que celles que posaient les économistes libéraux, des réponses bien différentes ; ils ont montré mathématiquement que l'imposition progressive et la fiscalité indirecte, fermement rejetées par leurs contemporains, pouvaient être équitables et efficaces.
