Abstract

TGV: a Time of Doubt ? – The TGV was not spared by the crisis. Traffic is down, and there are questions about the future of French HSR: the TGV. These questions are even more valid, as in France as well as several other countries there are ambitious plans for new HSR. After reviewing the conditions for success of the TGV, and therefore its limitations, the article examines the opportunities, now reduced, to extend its operational area. It then examines the threats that are now accumulating, including higher tolls and competition. Concerns must not be exaggerated in both cases; the sustainability of a model that would rather choose to allow higher tolls at the same time as reducing competition and extending the network is not endangered. But we must ask the question of the optimal size for the TGV system's network so that it does not become an excessive burden for the nation.
