L'utilité éclairée comme principe de morale : J.-B. Say est-il utilitariste ?

Abstract

J.-B. Say a bien connu Jeremy Bentham ainsi que James et J.-S. Mill, tous les trois considérés comme des " pères " de la philosophie utilitariste. Par ailleurs, il est un des rares à soutenir une théorie de la valeur utilité contre la théorie de la valeur travail de l'école classique anglaise, dominante à l'époque. Tout le poussait à fonder sa morale sur le Principe d'utilité, ce qu'il voulu réaliser sans jamais y parvenir. Est-ce par faute de temps ou à cause de contradictions insurmontables avec le reste de son œuvre ? Nous tentons de dénouer cet écheveau après avoir précisé ce qu'il faut entendre par utilitarisme à travers trois générations d'auteurs du XVIIIe au XXe siècle se réclamant ou se démarquant de cette philosophie.
