Abstract

In the large African cities, where poverty prevails, walking occupies a capital position in daily travel patterns. Disaggregated analysis of travel behaviour of city dwellers who travelled only on foot on a weekday shows that the prevalence of walking as the only available and affordable mean of transport generates travel patterns limited to the vicinity of the home. Populations are thus maintained in the poverty trap. Findings show evidence of the need for considering walking explicitly in urban policies along with the other modes of transport.
