Abstract

L'évolution historique des représentations de la vieillesse en France et les différences dans la définition des rôles sociaux dévolus à cet âge de la vie amènent à préciser ce qu'il faut entendre par "personnes âgées", "troisième âge", "quatrième âge". Les principaux aspects démographiques et géographiques du vieillissement de la population et les particularités des conditions de vie des personnes âgées sont abordées sous l'angle de l'état de santé, des situations domestique et familiale et des revenus. Les tendances divergentes en matière de consommation de biens et de loisirs aux âges élèves et les différentes modalités de l'insertion sociale et ses grands facteurs de différenciation sont analysées.
