Abstract

This article offers a critical overview on the literature about m-Health initiatives implemented in Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim is to outline new perspectives regarding women's health and maternal health in remote areas. The first section of this article is a synthesis of arguments promoted by m-Health advocates. The second section questions those arguments. The thesis supporting the idea that m-health would be a favorable factor for maternal health in disadvantaged areas needs to be seriously nuanced. Its main weakness is to ask for prerequisites that are still lacking in low and middle-income countries. Among them, the substantial improvement of basic health services and the involvement of the public authorities as coordinators of health policies are significant. If those conditions are not met, the promotion of m-health could reinforce the fragmentation of healthcare systems at the expense of the poorest people.
