L'émergence du panoptique dans la pratique de quantification de soi

Abstract

Les nouvelles technologies ubiquitaires ont amené à repenser le concept de panoptique qui était largement mobilisé dans la recherche en technologies de l'information. L'apparition d'une nouvelle forme de technologie dédiée à la quantification de nos habitudes et de nos données physiologiques dans un but d'amélioration de notre santé relance le débat sur la surveillance par les technologies de l'information. Cet article propose d'analyser les pratiques de quantification de soi par les technologies digitales au regard du concept de panoptique de Foucault. Afin de confronter le cadre conceptuel aux pratiques de quantification, des entretiens semi-directifs ont été menés sur un échantillon hétérogène de pratiquants ainsi qu'une analyse des forums de discussion des constructeurs. L'analyse des données met en évidence l'importance d'avoir un contrôle panoptique de l'individu pour atteindre le but que le pratiquant s'est fixé.
