Abstract

For-profit hospitals hold an important position in the French health sector: about a third of all hospitals and more than 20% of hospital capacity, the topic is little discussed in the literature. Still, the horizontal integration into financialised groups since the 1990 can be followed in the literature of diferent fields. Back in 1994, 13% of the for profit hospitals were part of a group, in 2017, it's more than 60%. Private equity funds played a major role into the depth of the concentration and the transformation of the sector: financial strategies overtake production strategies of hospitals and groups. We can see with the exemple of the two leaders of the sector, Elsan and Ramsay, the impact of private equity funds on consolidation through mergers and acquisitions.
