Abstract

Renowned as the first school of economics and as the formulator of the doctrine of laissez-faire associated with liberalism, Physiocracy was a system of philosophy based on metaphysics, politics and economics. Under the lead of François Quesnay, the physiocrats nurtured a broad philosophical ambition, aimed at unravelling the functioning of the world and its laws, including the social, political, economic and behavioural realms of individuals. Seeking to explore this less well-known perspective of physiocracy and offering an introduction to its main writings, the book "The Philosophy of Physiocracy" invites us to reflect on the moment when economic concepts are elaborated by philosophical thought.
