Abstract

L'élaboration de la science des mœurs coïncide avec l'apparition dans la littérature savante de la figure du sauvage, dont l'examen a donné lieu à de nombreux débats et débouché sur un héritage ambivalent mais fécond. Aux discours soupçonnables de rationaliser l'idée d'une supériorité des mœurs occidentales qui perdurera dans les siècles suivants, s'opposent des approches soulignant l'influence des circonstances exogènes anticipant les pratiques ethnologiques et anthropologiques modernes.
