Abstract

Sur le modèle des sciences de la nature , la « science des mœurs » entreprend d'étudier l'homme en passant par l'observation et l'expérience. Inspirée par Newton et Locke, cette investigation empiriste de la morale se propose, au XVIIIe siècle, d'appliquer une méthode nouvelle à un objet jusqu'alors réservé aux métaphysiciens ou aux moralistes. En s'intéressant, non plus à la morale de l'homme en général mais aux conduites de la vie concrète des hommes dans toute leur diversité, des pionniers des sciences humaines entendent quitter le champ de la spéculation abstraite pour établir les lois des différents usages et coutumes. Or, la transposition d'une méthode scientifique dans le domaine des mœurs et ses enjeux demeurent problématiques. De quelle science, la science des mœurs est-elle le nom ?
