Abstract

In Xenophon's Anabasis, the Greek mercenaries of Cyrus consider to abandon him because he does not pay them. They continue the expedition only because of the Persian prince's promises to increase their pay and to offer them gifts beyond their expectations at the end of the adventure. But in fact, he gives them nothing, and remains in debt to his men. This debt of the employer towards his troops is a source of political instability within the community but also, paradoxically, a kind of contract that ensures the loyalty of the soldiers until the payment of their wages.
