Abstract

Industrial cyber‐physical system (ICPS) is one of the key solutions to meeting the new trends and challenges in logistics. This chapter addresses the impacts of new technological paradigms and, more specifically, of ICPS on the evolution of contemporary and modern logistics and supply chains at the organizational, decision‐making and operational levels. The organization of contemporary logistics and supply chains is characterized by globalization, specification and outsourcing of activities. The chapter presents and characterizes three main components of contemporary logistics chains: intra‐site logistics, urban logistics and inter‐site inter‐city logistics. Based on mutual collaboration, the concept of the Physical Internet aims to interconnect logistics systems on a large scale in order to take advantage of synergies between different systems. The chapter discusses a concrete example of the contribution of ICPS to address an important issue in the implementation of the Physical Internet network: routing protocols.
