Abstract

In 1880, the rubber industry was a classic illustration of the French industry in the first wave of industrialisation : a wide range of fashion accessories manufactured largely for export, within a multitude of highly dispersed structures. The development of the car tyre, a revolutionary technological product, lead to the early modernisation of production facilities. After 1900, the rapid advance of the tyre drew in it's quake those firms destined to become the first large modern companies. Between the two wars, output was extended to other rubber products. As early as the thirties, a mere handful of these firms, both domestic and foreign, controlled three quarters of the total output of the sector. The market-orientated structures of the eighteen eighties were thus upturned, making way for the process of technical transformation and the development of the large modern firm.
