Abstract

The Recent Developments of the History of Banking Crises in the United States This paper surveys the recent literature on banking crises in the United States between 1838 and 1933. A more microeconomic analysis provided these main results : — contagious bank runs took place during the « Free Banking » era - solvent banks have been subject to runs during the National Banking era — during the Great Depression, the main cause of bank failures has been a deterioration of local and regional economic fundamentals.
