Abstract

The Italian economy with its remarkably high growth levels in the 1950s is now bringing up the euro-zone rear in the 21st century. This mediocre result is largely attributable to the incompatibility between national macro-economic regulation whose redistribution, particularly between North and South, was considered an essential locomotive for a long time, and the European choices Italy made, particularly in monetary policy, as of 1979. The financing of this interregional redistribution had been possible for a long time only thanks to inflation and foreign depreciation of the currency, and then to the increase in public debt. With the adoption of the euro and European public finance regulation such expedients are now off limits.
