Que vaut la promesse d'égalité démocratique lorsque la situation matérielle des classes moyennes et populaires stagne ou régresse ? À travers une analyse implacable des inégalités mondiales, Branko Milanovic met en évidence la difficulté du combat pour la justice sociale au début du XXIe siècle. ... En janvier 2019, l'ONG Oxfam rendait public un chiffre édifiant, pour alerter les consciences. Les 26 personnes les plus riches de la planète posséderaient autant de patrimoine que la moitié la plus pauvre de l'humanité. 26 multimilliardaires d'un côté, face à 3,8 milliards de personnes dans le besoin de l'autre : comment a-t-on pu en arriver là ? C'est tout le mérite du livre de l'économiste Branko Milanovic, publié en anglais en 2016 et récemment traduit en français par les éditions La Découverte, que de chercher à expliquer cet engrenage et ses conséquences politiques.
