Abstract

Expliquer l'origine de la croissance économique constitue la préoccupation fondamentale de la théorie économique depuis l'ouvrage fondateur d'Adam Smith, au titre explicite : Recherche sur la nature et les causes de la richesse des nations (1776). Au coeur de l'augmentation régulière de la production se trouve la croissance de la population et celle de la productivité, via le progrès technique. Néanmoins, les économistes butent encore sur la compréhension et l'anticipation des cycles de croissance. Si l'innovation y joue un rôle majeur, Jean-Luc Gaffard note que les préférences des acteurs contribuent aussi largement à infléchir le rythme de la croissance. Restent aux pouvoirs publics la délicate tâche de gérer les déséquilibres inhérents à l'intégration de l'innovation.
