Les femmes sur le marché du travail en France: les progrès marquent le pas

Abstract

The historic progress made with regard to women's integration into the labour market is undeniable. The rates of labour force participation and the rates of employment have increased. Employment has now become the norm for women, replacing that of their being homemakers. The percentage of working women has increased steadily. However, inequalities remain and have taken other forms. Women are integrated into the labour market often through precarious and compulsory parttime jobs. As for women whose integration into the labour market is stable, they almost always find themselves in lower-level careers than men. Because of women's less promising qualifications, precarious or part-time jobs and slower career paths, wage inequalities persist. The wage gap has ceased to narrow, with the differences being at the same level as they were in the mid-1990s. Therefore, the reasons for the persistent wage gap should be examined in light of the factors shaping women and men's unequal positions in the labour market.
