Abstract

It is often argued that military expenditures are unproductive, even though they provide the essential service of national security. In this context, an analysis should be designed in terms of opportunity costs, i.e. by making several assumptions concerning the correspondence between the cost of this international security and the possible cost of the absence of a defence effort on the potential of military conflicts directly or indirectly concerning the country, in the short and long term. The appearance of a war or a threat of armed conflict in the international discourse can then modify the economic variables through the exercise of the effects of domination, dependence or even invasion. Ceteris paribus, however, it is interesting to see the influence of military expenditure (and its content and structure) on economic growth and development, on national investment, employment, inflation, the balance of trade or civilian and military technologies
