Abstract

The impact of military spending on the French economy does not lend itself easily to econometric analysis and model simulation. However, it is possible to identify some elements that express short-term trends, which may be modified according to strategic factors involving national security, in situations of tension and power struggles or, on the contrary, disarmament. For the period analysed, characterized by a certain evolution of the Cold War, the influence of military expenditure on growth is weaker than that of other public expenditure, military capital expenditure is more effective for growth than expenditure on personnel, it reduces private consumption and has a rather negative effect on gross fixed capital formation, but it has a positive effect in the fight against unemployment, but also on price increases, but also on inflation.
