Abstract

Contemporary economic systems have neglected ecology, the environment, social inequality and economic democracy. The increase in pollution of all kinds, the call of the Club of Rome for zero growth, energy issues, the economic crises of Western societies, and the contestation of consumer societies are all important factors in the need to move from a poetic-ecological ecology to a political ecology. In a capitalist system obsessed with self-interest and short-term profit, neither the defence of the exploitation of the earth and of human beings, nor the capacity to engage in a collective democratic path seems possible. It is therefore necessary to reorganise the political system in place by giving a greater place to economic democracy and societal control of the abuse of privatised wealth.
