Abstract

Economists have not dealt much with the issue of international security and defence economics. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, due in part to an excessive effort in favour of the military-industrial complex, several studies have been undertaken to analyse disarmament procedures, their costs and their "dividends". Several questions are raised for the national economies. How to reconvert part of the armament activities? Should military activities be privatised or should arms exports be sought instead? How important are arms sales in this process and what is the potential for developing European solutions in the arms economy? Once removed from these questions about the links between the military sector and economic development, several leading economists have contributed their analyses on disarmament issues.
