Abstract

Producer and consumer price indices for fresh fruit and the monitoring of retail and shipping prices in supermarkets of a seasonal basket of French products representative of consumer purchases show the strong seasonality, their high inter-annual variability related to weather and market conditions. In trend or annual average, basket prices at both stages have evolved quite parallel up to 2012; second, the gap widens at the expense of the upstream price and the gross margin of distribution, which was fairly stable from 2008 to 2012, in 2012-13. Prices at both stages are generally moving in the same direction with however a variable difference: the gross margin of the distribution tends to increase in proportion to prices, amplifying the impact on the retail price of changes in the shipping price.
