Abstract

La décision américaine d'intervenir militairement au Vietnam est souvent considérée comme peu rationnelle. Dans cet article, nous l'appréhendons à travers un homme, Lyndon B. Johnson, et son ambition, transformer en profondeur la société américaine sur le plan économique et social. En recourant à la narration analytique – une méthode mêlant histoire et formalisation mathématique – nous soutenons que cette guerre était inévitable pour mener à bien le projet de politique intérieure de Johnson, la « Grande Société ». Notre cadre théorique éclaire aussi le processus de décision qui a mené le président américain à cacher des informations au public, dans le but de rendre conciliables un projet interne ambitieux et une contrainte extérieure forte. Enfin, nous mobilisons la théorie du contournement démocratique pour comprendre le double échec de Johnson : la défaite au Vietnam et la non-implémentation de sa « Grande Société ».
