Abstract

La tendencia creciente de las últimas décadas -especialmente desde los ‘80' - hacia la pluralidad monetaria a nivel local y regional está desafiando el monopolio bancario sobre las monedas oficiales. Desde entonces, se han desarrollado más de 5.000 experiencias de monedas complementarias/alternativas, locales, comunitarias y sociales, según lo estimado por Blanc (2018). Aunque estas monedas se han utilizado generalmente en la promoción del desarrollo local, han tomado una amplia variedad de formas en diferentes tiempos y territorios: desde sistemas de crédito mutuo como el LETS, hasta bancos de tiempo y bancos comunitarios, desde sistemas de cambio digitalizados a redes de trueque de moneda de papel, y desde los sistemas de crédito monetario y bancario como Fortaleza en Brasil, hasta monedas complementarias patrocinadas por el propio estado municipal, como el SOL en Toulouse.
