Abstract

According to Smith (1776) mercantilist such as, Locke and Mun give a central role to precious metals as money, leading them to confuse wealth and money. However, Smith doesn't give the same attention to Locke and Mun: it seems that for Smith Mun is the true mercantilist opponent. This paper inquires why we encounter such differences of treatment between Locke and Mun. Our hypothesis is that Locke defends social stability between the landed men and the moneyed men. Thus he is in favour of equilibrium of interest and doesn't confuse the merchant's interest with the general interest.
