Abstract

Le déversement le 21 mars 1978 des 220 000 tonnes d'hydrocarbures de l'Amoco-Cadiz sur les côtes bretonnes a été à l'origine d'une marée noire sans précédent. Une telle catastrophe, a donné lieu à un procès interminable avec la Société Amoco afin d'obtenir réparation des dommages. Le jugement vient d'être rendu, 14 ans plus tard. Les auteurs ont été associés dès le début aux recherches économiques menées aux Etats-Unis et en France, afin d'évaluer l'impact de cette marée noire. Ils ont également été impliqués dans les expertises liées au procès. Cet article résume les études réalisées. Les méthodes de calcul des dommages sont comparées pour chaque catégorie de coût social (coûts de nettoyage et de remise en état, pertes d'aménités, pertes du tourisme et dommages des ressources marines). En conclusion, figure un commentaire sur l'utilisation des évaluations économiques, par le juge et par la Cour d'appel.
